The Center for Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences (CDSS) administers doctoral programs in Political Science, Psychology and Sociology in close collaboration with the School of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim. Research and teaching takes an empirical-analytical approach, which is informed by theory and relies on quantitative methods.
The CDSS as part of the GESS was established through the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. We offer a unique experience to our doctoral students, including the opportunity to engage with leading professors and conduct research across the program disciplines. All doctoral programs are taught in English and more importantly there are no tuition fees. Benefit from government funded first-class education.
Admitted students are guaranteed financing for three years. This might come in the form of scholarships (currently 1.250€/month), teaching or research assistantship positions at the University of Mannheim. Admission is purely based on merit and open to excellent candidates holding a research-oriented Master's degree.
CDSS doctoral students have published in top academic journals, for instance the European Journal of Political Research, Political Analysis, Educational Psychology or European Sociological Review, and have obtained academic positions at leading national and international universities such as the Technical University of Munich, London School of Economics, University of Oxford, Autonomous University of Madrid, Harvard Kennedy School to name but a few.
